Cast from a laptop to a TV without a Chromecast

A Chromecast is one way to get a film from a laptop onto the TV, not the only one. AIX Player casts to seven TV families, and many smart TVs and streaming boxes already belong to one of them, so there may be nothing to buy and no HDMI cable to run.

Cast without a Chromecast in four steps

  1. Find your TV’s family. Look for the system name in the TV’s settings or on its home screen (Google TV, Fire TV, Roku, webOS, Tizen) and match it to a card below.
  2. Put the laptop and the TV on the same network. The same Wi-Fi network for both; a guest network keeps them apart.
  3. Open a video in AIX Player and press cast. The TV appears in the list by the name it was given. Pick it.
  4. Approve once if the TV asks. A PIN on Fire TV and Apple TV, Allow on LG and Samsung, or the free channel on a Roku. After that, casting is one click.

Which one do you have?

Each card is one family. The device guides cover the one-time setup and what that TV can play directly.

Google Cast built in

Google TV and Android TV sets and boxes, including Sony Bravia TVs and NVIDIA Shield, have Google Cast inside. Nothing to install.

Fire TV

Fire TV sticks and boxes, and TVs with Fire TV built in. The first cast shows a PIN on the TV.

Roku

Roku sticks, boxes and Roku TVs. Add the free AIX Casting Receiver channel once.

Apple TV

An Apple TV box. The first cast shows a PIN on the TV.

LG webOS

LG smart TVs running webOS. The first cast asks you to Allow AIX Player on the TV.

Samsung Tizen

Samsung smart TVs running Tizen. The first cast asks you to Allow AIX Player on the TV.

DLNA

Many connected TVs and AV receivers speak DLNA, the long-standing home-network standard. Nothing to pair.

Jellyfin, Emby and Plex videos play on your PC; casting media-server videos is not supported. These casting steps are for video files on your PC’s own drives or on a USB or SD drive. Read about media servers.

No smart TV at all?

If your TV belongs to none of these families, a streaming stick or box from one of them adds casting, and AIX Player does not need any particular make. An HDMI cable from the laptop works too, with the TV as a second screen.

What about screen mirroring?

Windows can also show your whole screen on a TV or adapter that supports wireless display: press Windows key + K. That is the right tool for slides, web pages or anything that is not a video file. For a film from your drive, casting sends the video itself instead of a copy of your desktop. Casting vs screen mirroring explains the difference.

What the TV receives

  • Picture. HDR stays HDR when the TV can play the file directly; otherwise the picture is converted to SDR for the TV.
  • Sound. A file the TV plays directly keeps its own soundtrack; every stream AIX Player converts carries AAC sound.
  • Subtitles. The subtitle you choose shows on the TV.
