AVI file not playing on Windows 11?

Old files from old drives often refuse to open on a new machine — not because they are damaged, but because modern Windows quietly dropped what they need.

Why old files stop working

AVI dates from the early 1990s and the codecs inside it — XVID, DIVX, MPEG-4 Part 2 — belong to that era. Modern Windows no longer ships decoders for several of them, so a file that played fine a decade ago now shows an error.

The tempting shortcut to avoid

The usual advice is to install a bundle of system-wide decoders. These are of varying quality and can destabilise other apps — a heavy fix for a simple problem, and one worth avoiding.

A cleaner answer

Why old recordings look soft on a modern screen

Older files frequently carry the wrong information about their shape, or none at all, so a player has to guess — which is why old recordings so often appear stretched or squashed. Setting the aspect manually fixes it in a click, and AIX Player remembers the choice for that file. Footage recorded on an early phone or camcorder held sideways can be rotated the same way.
