Video stretched, squashed or in black bars? Fix the shape

A stretched picture may need an aspect-ratio correction; black bars can also be correct for the video’s shape. AIX Player’s picture fit, zoom and rotation controls are free and can help adjust the view.

Fix the shape in four steps

  1. Open the picture fit setting. In AIX Player, open Settings → Video → Picture fit.
  2. Try Auto first. Auto uses the shape the video says it has, which is right for most files.
  3. Choose the shape if it still looks wrong. Choose 16/9 or 4/3 only when that matches the intended shape of the video. Fill preserves the aspect ratio and crops to cover the screen, and Stretch pulls the picture to the screen’s shape whatever its own.
  4. Start again at any time. Press R to reset zoom, pan and aspect.

Stretched or squashed

People look too tall and thin, or too short and wide. The video is being shown at the wrong shape, usually because the file carries the wrong shape flag, which is common in older rips and camcorder footage. Choose 16/9 or 4/3 in Picture fit until circles look round and faces look natural. Stretch fills the screen by distorting the picture, so keep it for the rare video that needs it.

Full screen, but tiny in the middle

The black bars are part of the picture. Some copies have them built in, often a widescreen film inside a 4:3 frame, with bars on every side, so going full screen only makes the bars bigger too. For built-in bars, use More → Video settings → Zoom and choose Fit, 100%, 125%, 150%, 200% or 300%; Picture fit → Fill preserves shape while cropping to fill the window. When the picture is zoomed, Shift and the arrow keys move it, and R resets zoom, pan and aspect.

Filmed sideways

Settings → Video → Rotation / flip turns the picture 90, 180 or 270 degrees, or flips it horizontally or vertically, for a phone clip filmed the wrong way round. Your file is not changed.

All free

Picture fit, zoom and rotation are free in every copy of AIX Player. The other picture controls, from brightness to the AIX Pro colour tools, have their own page, and picture adjustments worth making explains when to use them.

Picture adjustments, picture fit and Rotation / flip apply across videos until you change or reset them; they are not saved separately for each file.
