AVI player for Windows 11 and 10

AIX Player opens AVI files on Windows 11 and 10, including the DivX and Xvid video most of them hold. The decoders are built into the app, so there is no codec pack to install and nothing changes elsewhere on your PC. It is free from the Microsoft Store, with no ads; supported SDR AVI playback has no time limit.

What an AVI holds, and what AIX Player plays

AVI is a container from the early 1990s: one file holding a video track and a sound track. Whether a player can open it depends on the codecs inside, and AIX Player decodes the ones AVI files use:

  • Video: MPEG-4 Part 2, the video known as DivX and Xvid, in most files; also H.264, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, H.263 and older codecs such as Cinepak.
  • Sound: MP3, AC-3 and AAC, in stereo or surround.
  • Subtitles: you can load a separate SRT or SUB/IDX file, or choose a supported embedded track when the file provides one. A subtitle file saved beside the video with the same name loads by itself.
  • File names: .avi, and the .divx and .xvid files some tools wrote, are all among the 81 file types AIX Player registers with Windows.

Open an AVI in three steps

  1. Install AIX Player. Get it free from the Microsoft Store using the button above.
  2. Open the file. In File Explorer, right-click the AVI, choose Open with, then AIX Player. To open every AVI this way, make AIX Player the default video player in Windows Settings.
  3. Pick the sound and subtitles. If the file has more than one audio track, switch it from the audio menu, or press A or B. Subtitle tracks switch with J or V.

Old recordings, shown properly

Many AVI files are old TV recordings or camcorder transfers, recorded as interlaced video. Deinterlace is set to automatic by default, so the comb-like lines on movement are removed for you. Aspect ratio and zoom fix a picture that arrives stretched or squashed, and deband smooths the steps in skies and dark walls; deinterlace, aspect ratio, zoom and deband are all free. Footage filmed the wrong way round can be turned with rotation and flip in Settings → Video.

Watch an AVI on your TV

AIX Player can cast an AVI to your TV. For DivX or Xvid video that the selected TV cannot play directly, AIX converts the video while it streams. Casting has its own free allowance; see Free and Pro.
