Make AIX Player your default video player on Windows

When AIX Player installs, it registers its 81 video file types with Windows, so it appears under Open with and in Default apps. Choosing the default is a Windows setting, not a button inside the app: Windows asks you to make the choice yourself. There are two ways to do it.

One file type at a time: Open with

1. Right-click a video in File Explorer, for example an MKV.
2. Choose Open with, then Choose another app.
3. Select AIX Player. On Windows 11 choose Always. On Windows 10 tick Always use this app to open files of that type, then select OK.
4. Repeat for each file type you use, such as MP4, AVI or MOV. Each type is set once.

Every type in one place: Default apps

1. Open Settings → Apps → Default apps.
2. Windows 11: find AIX Player in the list of apps and select it. Windows lists every file type AIX Player can open; select a type, such as .mkv, and choose AIX Player.
3. Windows 10: under Video player, select the current app and choose AIX Player. For single types, use Choose default apps by file type.

If AIX Player is not in the list

AIX Player registers its file types when it is installed from the Microsoft Store. Check that it is installed (search for AIX Player in Start). In the Open with list, expand the choices if it is not shown at first. A file type AIX Player does not register, such as a playlist file, will not offer it as a default.

Which file types it can open

The 81 registered types include MKV and MK3D, MP4 and M4V, MOV, AVI, WMV, WebM, TS, M2TS and MTS, MPEG and MPG, VOB, FLV, 3GP, RM and RMVB, OGV and many older and broadcast formats. The video formats page lists them with the codecs inside.

Changing it back

Your choice can be changed at any time, the same way: pick another app under Open with or in Default apps.
