Why subtitles vanish when you cast — and how to keep them

Subtitles can travel as a selectable track or be drawn into the video picture. AIX chooses a supported route for the file and receiver; not every TV can switch every subtitle format or language during a cast.

Cast a local video with subtitles

1. Check the file on your PC. Open it in AIX and confirm that the subtitle language you want is actually present. For a separate SRT file, start with the external-subtitle guide.
2. Choose the language before casting. In Settings > Casting, set your preferred subtitle language. This matters when the selected track must become part of the picture.
3. Connect the receiver. Keep the PC and TV reachable on the same network, then follow the setup guide for your TV and choose a local video to cast. Some receivers require their AIX receiver app.
4. Check the casting track picker. Open Select audio/subtitle track and choose the Subtitle tab. Select an available track; use Show all when the picker has folded additional tracks or languages away.
5. Read the row state and check the TV. Always on means the subtitle is already part of the picture. Not supported means the receiver cannot draw that track during this cast. Follow the message shown in AIX rather than assuming that a selection changed the TV.

Selectable track or Always on?

Selectable subtitles stay separate from the picture when the receiver supports them. Available tracks and mid-cast changes depend on the receiver and subtitle format.

Burned-in subtitles are drawn into the frames sent to the TV. The picker marks them Always on because they cannot be turned off during that cast. To change the burned-in language, stop, set the preferred language in Settings > Casting, and start the cast again. Conversion can increase preparation time.

The subtitle language is wrong

Check the selected row and any on-screen notice. A track label comes from the file and may be incomplete or wrong. If the expected language is not listed, expand Show all and compare the track during local playback. For an Always on track, changing a separate selectable row does not remove text already drawn into the picture.

The video plays, but no subtitles appear

Confirm that the file contains the track, or that your external subtitle file loads on the PC. A nearby SRT file is not proof that the TV received it. See missing-subtitle troubleshooting. If AIX reports that the TV cannot show the writing system, set that language as preferred in Settings > Casting and cast again as the notice directs.

Text is hard to read, or out of sync

Check the source on the PC first. Use the subtitle styling guide or subtitle timing guide, then check the result on the actual TV. Receiver-rendered and burned-in subtitles can have different styling limits; do not assume a PC preview proves the TV result.

Which sources does this walkthrough cover?

This walkthrough is for supported local video files. AIX 3.0.6 does not cast items from its Jellyfin, Emby or Plex Media Servers browser. Media Servers playback is on the PC and has its own allowance.
