The setting everyone is told to enable, rarely with an explanation of what it moves or why it matters.

Two ways to decode a film

Software decoding uses the general-purpose processor. Hardware decoding uses a dedicated block inside the graphics chip and can reduce processor load and power use when the format and hardware support it. In AIX Player the switch is Settings → Video → Hardware decode, and it is on by default.

What each vendor calls it

On Windows, AIX requests supported graphics decoding through D3D11 and uses software fallback where needed. Codec and profile support depend on the graphics chip and driver.

Why it is not always used

Older hardware has no block for the newest codecs, and a few unusual files trip the hardware path. AIX Player falls back to software in those cases so the film still plays.

What it means for battery and heat

This is where you may notice it rather than in the picture. Processor decoding can increase load, fan noise and battery use during a 4K film. Supported hardware decoding can reduce that load, although the result depends on the file, graphics hardware, driver and power settings.

When software decoding is the right answer

Hardware decoding is not always better. Older graphics chips may not support newer formats, and occasionally a hardware path mishandles a particular file — which can produce a green or pink picture. Falling back to software provides another path for supported files, although damaged or unsupported files can still fail.

Why graphics drivers matter more than you expect

Support for formats can improve through a driver update. If a file plays but the picture is discoloured, or performance is worse than the hardware suggests it should be, updating the graphics driver is an important troubleshooting step.
