The setting everyone is told to enable, rarely with an explanation of what it moves or why it matters.

Two ways to decode a film

Software decoding uses the general-purpose processor. Hardware decoding uses a small dedicated block inside your graphics chip that does nothing but decode video — far faster at that one job, and far more efficient.

What each vendor calls it

Intel calls it Quick Sync, NVIDIA calls it NVDEC and AMD calls it VCN. They do the same work; AIX Player uses whichever your machine has, and the newest generations cover HEVC, AV1 and 10-bit HDR as well as H.264.

Why it is not always used

Older hardware has no block for the newest codecs, and a few unusual files trip the hardware path. AIX Player falls back to software in those cases so the film still plays.

What it means for battery and heat

This is where you notice it rather than in the picture. Decoding a 4K film on the processor can occupy most of it for the length of the film, which means fans at full speed and a laptop battery gone in an hour or two. The dedicated video block in a graphics chip does the same work at a fraction of the power, so the machine stays cool, quiet, and usable for whatever else you are doing.

When software decoding is the right answer

Hardware decoding is not always better. Older graphics chips have no support for the newest formats, and occasionally a hardware path mishandles a particular file — which is what produces a green or pink picture. Falling back to software is slower and hungrier but always works, which is why a player needs both rather than insisting on one.

Why graphics drivers matter more than you expect

Support for new formats often arrives through a driver update rather than new hardware, so a machine that could not decode something last year may manage it now. If a file plays but the picture is discoloured, or performance is worse than the hardware suggests it should be, updating the graphics driver is the single most effective thing to try.
