Native playback on Snapdragon and Copilot+ PCs

On an Arm64 Windows machine, most apps run through a translation layer. For video that is the worst possible case — and it is avoidable.

Why translation costs so much here

A film is thousands of frames that each have to be decoded on time. When every instruction takes a detour through translation, the margin disappears: frames drop, the machine warms up and the battery drains faster than it should.

A true Arm64 build

AIX Player is compiled for the processor in your machine, so nothing is translated on the way. Decoding runs on the Snapdragon’s own video block, and when a television needs a file converted, the encoding runs on its hardware video encoder.

How to tell whether an app is running native

Windows does not make this obvious, and most people never think to check — they simply notice that the machine gets warm and the battery goes faster than expected. Task Manager shows the architecture of each running app, and anything listed as x64 on an Arm machine is being translated. For most apps the cost is small. For video, where every frame passes through, it is the difference between smooth and stuttering.

Why Copilot+ laptops are worth the native build

These machines were bought for their battery life and their silence, and video is the workload most likely to undo both. Running a translated player turns an all-day laptop into a half-day one during a film. A native build keeps the decoding on the hardware designed for it, which is what those machines are actually good at — and the difference is obvious within minutes of a 4K film.

Everything else works identically

A native Arm64 build is not a reduced version. Casting reaches the same seven television families, subtitles are handled the same way, and the same formats open. The only difference is that none of it is being translated on the way, which you notice as the absence of problems rather than the presence of features.
