Native playback on Snapdragon and Copilot+ PCs

On an Arm64 Windows machine, most apps run through a translation layer. For video that is the worst possible case — and it is avoidable.

Why translation costs so much here

A film is thousands of frames that each have to be decoded on time. A translated x64 application adds work that a native Arm64 build avoids; the practical effect varies with the file, hardware and system load.

A true Arm64 build

AIX Player is compiled for Arm64, so the app itself does not need x64 translation. Decoding can use supported Snapdragon video hardware. When casting on Qualcomm, only H.264 encoding is hardware-assisted; other conversion stages use the processor.

What you actually notice

The native build avoids translation overhead and can use supported video acceleration. Smoothness, temperature and battery use still depend on the file, hardware, driver, display, network and power settings.

How to tell whether an app is running native

Task Manager can show the architecture of a running app. An app listed as x64 on an Arm machine uses Windows translation, while an Arm64 listing identifies a native build. The performance difference varies by workload and system.

Why Copilot+ laptops are worth the native build

A native build avoids x64 translation overhead. Supported hardware decoding can also reduce processor work, but battery life, temperature and playback performance vary with the file and system.

Everything else works identically

A native Arm64 build is not a reduced version. Casting reaches the same seven television families, subtitles are handled the same way, and the same formats open. The only difference is that none of it is being translated on the way, which you notice as the absence of problems rather than the presence of features.
