4K video lagging or stuttering on your PC?

A 4K film can drop frames because of processor decoding, storage, heat or power settings. These checks help isolate the cause.

The processor is doing a graphics job

Every frame of 4K has to be decoded. Done on the processor it is enormously expensive — hence the heat, the noise and the dropped frames — while the dedicated video hardware in your graphics chip sits idle.

Moving the work

AIX Player can use supported Intel, NVIDIA or AMD graphics hardware for decoding. This can reduce processor load, but playback still depends on the file, graphics support, driver, storage, display and power settings.

When it still stutters

Playing from a slow external drive can starve playback regardless of decoding. Copy the file to your internal drive to test, and check it is not still downloading.

How to tell decoding from a slow drive

Both can look similar on screen, but the fixes differ. Steady stutter with high processor load can indicate that hardware decoding is unavailable. Freezes in bursts can point to slow storage, a failing disk or an incomplete download. Copy the file to an internal drive and compare playback to test the storage path.

What makes a 4K file demanding

Resolution is only half of it. Bitrate — how much data each second of film uses — also matters, and a disc remux can use much more data than a streaming download at the same resolution. Laptops, power settings and thermal throttling

A laptop on battery deliberately runs its processor and graphics slower to save power, and one that has become hot will slow itself further to cool down. Both show up as stuttering that starts partway through a film rather than at the beginning. Plugging in and giving the machine airflow removes two variables before you change anything else.
