4K video lagging or stuttering on your PC?

A 4K film that drops frames, spins the fans up and flattens the battery is nearly always doing the work in the wrong place.

The processor is doing a graphics job

Every frame of 4K has to be decoded. Done on the processor it is enormously expensive — hence the heat, the noise and the dropped frames — while the dedicated video hardware in your graphics chip sits idle.

Moving the work

When it still stutters

Playing from a slow external drive can starve playback regardless of decoding. Copy the file to your internal drive to test, and check it is not still downloading.

How to tell decoding from a slow drive

Both look identical on screen, but the fix is different. If the stutter is steady throughout and the fans are loud, the processor is doing work the graphics card should be doing. If it plays smoothly and then freezes in bursts, with the machine staying quiet, the file is not arriving fast enough — a slow external drive, a failing disk, or a file that is still downloading. Copying that one file to your internal drive settles the question in a minute.

What makes a 4K file demanding

Resolution is only half of it. Bitrate — how much data each second of film uses — matters more, and a disc remux can run five times the bitrate of a streaming download at the same resolution. That is why one 4K film plays perfectly and another stutters on the same machine. Laptops, power settings and thermal throttling

A laptop on battery deliberately runs its processor and graphics slower to save power, and one that has become hot will slow itself further to cool down. Both show up as stuttering that starts partway through a film rather than at the beginning. Plugging in and giving the machine airflow removes two variables before you change anything else.
