Why HDR looks washed out on a PC

Why HDR can look grey, flat or too dark on Windows, and how tone mapping, display support and picture controls affect the result.

SDR playback is free with no time limit. HDR video: 180 free minutes, then AIX Pro. The allowance is once per install and counts only playing time. It applies to HDR from local files and network shares on any screen, including tone-mapped playback on an ordinary display. What happens when the HDR trial ends?

The Windows HDR switch

Windows has a system HDR setting. AIX adapts HDR playback to the display state, and colour problems need to be checked against the source, display and Windows configuration.

Let the player handle it

On an ordinary monitor the reliable arrangement is to leave the Windows switch off and let AIX Player tone-map HDR films for that display: the desktop and ordinary video look normal, and an HDR film keeps its highlight and shadow detail instead of being clipped. On a compatible HDR display with Windows HDR enabled, AIX requests HDR output.

Fine-tuning afterwards

If a film is still darker than you like — some are graded that way — brightness and contrast adjust it without touching the file. Gamma, saturation, hue and HDR tone-mapping strength are part of AIX Pro.

How to tell whether your screen really supports HDR

HDR appearance depends on the display and its configuration. Check the display’s HDR support and Windows configuration; a grey picture alone does not identify the cause. On an SDR screen, AIX tone-maps HDR to fit the display.

Why desktop and video need different settings

This is the heart of the problem. AIX adapts HDR video to the current display state. SDR display output uses tone mapping; compatible HDR output requires Windows HDR to be enabled.

When the film itself is simply dark

Some films are graded dark on purpose, and no setting will make a night scene look like daylight without ruining what the director intended. Where a scene is genuinely too dark for the room you are in, a small lift in brightness is better than a large one, and adjusting gamma rather than brightness keeps the black areas black instead of turning them grey. AIX saves picture adjustments globally; change or reset them when another video needs different settings.
