Player controls: speed, A-B repeat, bookmarks and more

The controls you reach for while a film is running, and the key for each. Most controls here are free; Precise seek and Background audio are AIX Pro, and casting has a free allowance.

The everyday keys

  • Space plays and pauses.
  • ← and → seek back and forward 10 seconds.
  • ↑ and ↓ change the volume.
  • M mutes, F goes fullscreen and Esc leaves fullscreen.
  • N and P play the next and previous video.

The keyboard’s own media keys work too. The full list is in Settings → General → Keyboard Shortcuts, and in the keyboard shortcuts guide.

Playback speed

From a quarter speed (0.25×) up to 2×. Slow it slightly for fast dialogue or a tutorial, or speed it up for a long talk. Choose the speed in the player, or in Settings → Audio → Playback speed. The speed stays where you left it, so if a video suddenly plays in slow motion or too fast, set it back to 1×.

A-B repeat

Press L to set A, press it again later to set B and loop the section, then press L a third time to clear it. It is useful for a phrase in another language, a guitar part or a step in a tutorial.

Repeat and shuffle

Settings → General → When a video ends decides what happens next: play the next video, repeat one, repeat all or stop at the end. Shuffle plays the queue in a random order. Playlists keep a running order you want to reuse.

Chapters, bookmarks and resume

Where a file carries chapter marks, PgUp jumps to the next chapter and PgDn to the previous one. A bookmark is a named marker you drop at the current moment and jump back to later. Playback starts chooses resume or start; resume applies to eligible saved positions, while positions near the start or end reopen from the beginning. Resume, bookmarks and chapters, in detail.

Snapshots

Press S, or select the camera button, to save the current frame as an image. Settings → Video → Snapshots sets the image format, PNG (lossless) or JPG (smaller), and the folder the snapshots are saved to.

Audio-only and background play

Ctrl+D switches to audio-only and keeps the sound going. With Background audio (AIX Pro) on in Settings → General, sound keeps playing when the window is minimised.

Picture-in-picture

Ctrl+Shift+P floats the video in a small window above your other apps. Watch in picture-in-picture.

Precise seek

Ordinary seeking jumps to the nearest keyframe, which is fast. Precise seek (AIX Pro) lands on the exact frame instead, for reviewing a clip or studying a scene. Switch it on in Settings → General → Precise seek.

Tap and double-tap

Tap the centre of the video to play or pause, and double-tap it to go fullscreen and back. Both work with a touchscreen, a mouse and a precision touchpad, and Settings → General → Player gestures turns them off. Gesture controls, in full.

Send it to the TV

Press T to cast the video to a TV on your network.

Casting is part of AIX Pro: the free app includes 60 casting minutes in total, once, not per session, and Pro makes casting unlimited.

Free and Pro

Every control on this page is free except Precise seek and Background audio (AIX Pro), and casting beyond its free allowance.

Every control, one reach away.

Speed, A-B repeat, chapters, bookmarks, snapshots and picture-in-picture are all in the free app.
