Sound in AIX Player: audio boost, equalizer and dialogue boost
Quiet recordings, buried dialogue and films that jump from a whisper to an explosion each have a control in AIX Player. Audio boost and the 10-band equalizer are free; dialogue boost and auto volume are part of AIX Pro.

Audio boost, up to 200%
Some files are simply recorded quietly. Audio boost raises the volume ceiling to 200% for those sources; with it off, the maximum is 100%. It is free: switch it on in Settings → Audio → Audio boost, then use the volume control or the ↑ and ↓ keys, which move the volume in steps of 5.
The 10-band equalizer
Ten bands from 31 Hz to 16 kHz, free for everyone. Start from a preset (Custom, Dance, Headphones, Large hall, Live, Party, Pop, Reggae, Rock, Ska, Soft, Soft rock, Spoken word or Vocal booster) or set each band by hand, and Flatten levels them all again when you have gone too far. How to use the equalizer well.
Dialogue boost
Dialogue boost (AIX Pro) lifts speech so it is clearer over music and effects, without turning the whole film up. Choose off, low or high. Why film dialogue is quiet, and the three controls that fix it.
Auto volume
Auto volume (AIX Pro) evens out loud and quiet passages, so a film does not leap from murmured dialogue to a deafening scene. Its modes are Off, Standard, Dynamic (Recommended), Night (Loudness Normalized) and On; it starts Off. A safety limiter runs in every mode, Off included.
Surround sound and the audio channel
AIX Player decodes AC-3, E-AC-3, FLAC, ALAC, Opus, Vorbis, AAC, MP3 and WMA inside the app, along with the other surround and lossless soundtracks of Blu-ray and DVD copies. Supported surround outputs can receive multichannel audio by default; stereo outputs receive a downmix. Settings → Audio → Audio channel / downmix offers Default (System), Stereo, Reverse Stereo, Left, Right and Surround (matrix). The soundtrack is always decoded in the app, so it is not passed through to an AV receiver. Surround sound on a PC, explained.
Tracks, languages and timing
Switch between the soundtracks a file carries from the audio menu, or press A or B to step through them. Set a preferred audio language in Settings → Audio and it is selected whenever a file offers it. If the lips and the words disagree, shift the audio delay earlier or later while the film plays. An external audio track (AIX Pro) adds a separate audio file to a video.
Keep listening
Background audio (AIX Pro), in Settings → General, keeps sound playing when the window is minimised; Ctrl+D switches to audio-only. The other player controls have their own page.
When you cast to a TV
A file the TV plays directly keeps its own soundtrack. When AIX Player converts a video for the TV as it streams, the sound travels as AAC, which TVs accept. How casting works.
Casting is part of AIX Pro: the free app includes 60 casting minutes in total, once, not per session, and Pro makes casting unlimited.
