How to make movie dialogue louder on a PC

You turn it up for the talking and get blasted by the next action scene. This is the most common complaint about modern film sound, and there are three controls for it.

Why modern mixes do this

Films are mixed for a cinema, where a wide gap between whispers and explosions is the point. On a laptop or a television that same range means dialogue sits too low and effects sit too high.

Lifting speech specifically

Why turning the volume up does not work

Laptop speakers versus headphones versus a soundbar

The same film needs different handling on each. Laptop speakers produce almost no bass, so cutting the low end and lifting the middle makes speech far clearer. Headphones reproduce everything, so heavy processing sounds artificial and a light touch is better. A soundbar or surround setup usually needs nothing at all. Choosing a different soundtrack

Many films carry more than one, and it is often the quickest fix of all. A stereo track is usually mixed for small speakers with dialogue sitting further forward, while the surround track assumes a room with a centre speaker doing that work. If speech is buried, switching soundtracks before touching any control can solve it outright.
