Unsupported codec errors: what to check

Check the codec, file completeness and playback setup when a video fails to open.

What the message really means

The message can indicate an unsupported codec or profile; an incomplete or damaged file can also fail during opening. Two people with the same version of Windows can get different results from the same file, because decoder availability varies by machine.

AIX includes its own decoders and does not require a system-wide codec pack.

Try a player with built-in decoders

Use a player that carries its own decoders. AIX registers 81 video file types and includes decoders for supported streams; unsupported or damaged files can still fail. Nothing is installed system-wide and nothing else on your PC is affected. The video codecs page lists every codec it decodes.

Why the same file plays on one PC and not another

This is the part that makes the error so confusing. Two machines running the same version of Windows can behave completely differently, because what each can decode depends on the manufacturer, the graphics hardware and what was licensed when the machine was built. A file that opened fine on a friend’s laptop can refuse on yours with no fault in the file at all — which is also why advice that worked for someone else so often does nothing for you.

What the error is not

A codec error does not by itself prove that a file is damaged or malicious. Changing the file extension does not solve it: renaming an .mkv to .mp4 relabels the container without changing what is inside and can make diagnosis harder. If the file fails in more than one current player or always stops at the same point, it may be incomplete or damaged.

How to see what a file actually contains

Rather than guessing, open the file details in AIX Player. The library’s File info lists available video codec, resolution, bitrate and audio-track count; these details help investigation but do not diagnose another player’s failure.
